Benjamin Barrett (b. 1762) in the American Revolution

Benjamin Barrett (born June 21, 1762, Ashby, Middlesex, Massachusetts), son of Benjamin Barrett (born 1735) and Sarah Merriam, also served in the American Revolution.  He married Bridget Lawrence on September 10, 1782 at Ashby, MA.  He died November 6, 1842 at Fosterville, Aurelius, New York, age 80 years.

According to his Revolutionary War Pension at the U.S. National Archives, he served in his father's draft place in March-May 1778 with Captain Issac Wood's Company, guarding British prisoners taken at Burgoyne's surrender.  He enlisted again in November 1778 and served with Captain Porter near Albany, New York.

Of Aurelius NY, was Private in Captain Wood’s Company of Massachusetts Militia, for 6 months. Pension of 20 dollars per year, starting 4 March 1831.

1 Apr 1833, appeared before Judge of Cayuga County, Benjamin Barrett, aged 70 years of Aurelius, 1 March 1778, my father was drafted to serve 3 months at Cambridge, Mass, in a Company Commanded by Isaac Wood. This company was guarding prisoners taken at Burgoyne’s surrender in 1777 and I stood in for my father and honourably discharged by Captain Wood. On the 1st November 1778, enlisted for 3 months, Captain John Porter’s Company, ordered to march to Claverack, New York, then to Albany, then to Great Cahoes on the Mohawk River to Guard the lines. Never attached to a particular regiment, but served as patroling guard. Discharged honourably by Captain Porter. Relinquishes further pension. [Signature]

John Wheeler of Ashby, Middlesex, Mass., certify Benjamin Barrett, formerly of Ashby, now of Aurelius, known to me was Rev War soldier in Captain Isaac Wood’s Company of Militia and Col Jonathan Reeds Regiment and joined at Cambridge. Afterward in New City, New York and marched to Cahoes Falls, and marched with him.
