Edward built the first log cabin on the prairie west of Winona, MN…..then a town of three buildings,-a frame hotel, a log cabin serving as a dwelling, a store & post office. (The mail being often carried in the postmaster’s hat), and an enclosed warehouse. The Indians had been taken from that part of the prairie the previous year. Mr. Barrett’s cabin was, like all others in the new country, nightly filled with Eastern travelers, curious to see the wonders of the far-famed territory. During the prevalence of cholera in the Spring of 1855, a large colony of Dunkards emigrate from Indiana, and many died on the way, and after reaching Minnesota, before they could provide comfortable shelter. Four of a family with 6 children, died at Mr. Barrett’s, in four days. The funeral, the first public religious service held in town, was at the cabin, and was succeeded by a weekly Sunday school, organized and conducted by Mr. Barrett, and Sunday services by the pastor of the colony and various preachers of any denomination who came around. The first day school met there, also the earliest town meetings, courts and elections. Mr. Barrett holding several town, county, state and United States offices. He left his farm to obtain better school and religious privileges, and moved farther west to Wasioja in 1866. Thence to Minneapolis where he and his son Frank had previously established the Asbestine Stone Company, for manufacturing artificial stone.

  1. Some errors in Minnesota Society Sons of the American Revolution:

This book was based on the actual applications to the Society. I have personally handled Edward Harris Barrett's application at the Minnesota Historical Society. He had some unclear memories of his ancestry. On his application, he claimed he was a descendant of Col. James Barrett, which is not true. His ancestor was James' brother Benjamin. Also, Benjamin Barrett was NOT at the North Bridge fight. He arrived later in the morning with the Ashby Minutemen, after the British had already been driven back toward Boston.

Historians have compiled a complete list of the men at the North Bridge and it can be found here:

He grandfather, William Johnson, did indeed serve as well, and was the the Battle of Bunker Hill serving with the New Hampshire Militia.

  3. Hello, I am writing a book on Minnesota Travel in the territorial days of Minnesota and was having a hard time finding any more info on "[E.H.] Barrett" whose name is mentioned as a stopping place (Tavern or Inn)in a newspaper travel account in the St. Paul Pioneer Daily on 12-18-1855. That is; until running across your terrific family site. Much information was gathered through your site, but I was wondering if you may provide the expanded full text of P. 111-112 of Genealogies of Some Old Families of Concord, Massachusetts? This must be missing some of that text and I can't pull up p. 111-112 online through your link. In return, I can provide the text of the stagecoach travel account here: " Took dinner at Barrett's, a real genuine Hoosier, living on the Rolling Stone Valley Road, where he has resided about a year - yet everything is comfortable and snug, and a first rate stopping place for the traveller." - Russ
